This is a fast, high-country road trip through Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper in the long days of summer. It suits travellers who want the famous turquoise lakes, a full day on the Icefields Parkway, and enough walking to feel the height of the Rockies. The pace is full, and the reward is a clear sense of how the mountains change as you move north.

When to goJFMAMJJASOND

July and August give the fullest version of the trip: long days, open high trails, blue lakes and busy trailheads. September brings cooler mornings, golden larches around Lake Louise, and elk rut season around Jasper, so it feels wilder even when the main sights are still popular.

Safety
Level 1: Exercise normal precautionsUS State Department travel advisory · checked 16 September 2026

Canada is at Level 1: exercise normal precautions, and the U.S. advisory does not single out Alberta, Banff, Lake Louise, the Icefields Parkway or Jasper for a higher level. For this route, the main safety issues are mountain-specific: changing weather, wildlife encounters, glacier and canyon edges, and long stretches of highway with limited services.

Days 1–2Canada

Banff and the Bow Valley

Start in Banff with the easy lift up , because it gives the whole trip a map before the driving begins. The cabins rise above spruce forest and the town drops into the valley, with Cascade Mountain looking almost close enough to touch. At the top, walk the boardwalk toward the old weather station and give yourself time to stand in the wind rather than turning straight back. Book a timed ticket before you go, and use transit from town if you want to avoid the small, busy parking area.

After you come down, cross to while your legs still feel the boardwalk. The pool is simple and social, with steam lifting into cool mountain air and wet footprints on the concrete deck. It is best as an evening pause after the gondola rather than as a centrepiece, so check current hours and keep it easy.

The next morning, follow the Bow Valley west to , about 30 minutes from Banff by car in normal traffic. The path runs on catwalks fixed to the canyon wall, with the creek loud below and spray cooling the narrow bends near the falls. Walk to the Lower Falls if you want a short outing, or continue to the Upper Falls and make a half day of it. Go early, late, or by transit, because the canyon feels very different before the main wave of visitors arrives.

This first stretch is the trip in miniature: big views above town, hot water at the end of the day, then a narrow canyon where the mountains feel close. If you are short on time, the hot springs can be the thing to shorten; the canyon and the gondola do more to set up the days ahead.

Days 3–4Canada

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake

Move your base to Lake Louise for two nights, or start very early from Banff, and build the day around . The lake is most powerful from the short rockpile path, where the water sits below the Ten Peaks in a colour that still looks unreal even with a crowd around you. Once the first rush eases, walk part of the shore and listen for the small slap of canoe wakes against the stones. Bring what you need with you, because the lakeshore has very limited services and weak or absent phone signal.

Use the connector to reach , or give it its own morning if you want a less rushed hike. The lakeshore is busy near the hotel, with camera shutters, canoe paddles and tour groups all working at once, then it quiets as you walk farther along the water. A simple out-and-back along the shore takes about an hour, and the light is often softer at the ends of the day. If the weather turns grey, the lake still works because the cliffs and glaciers show through the cloud.

From Lake Louise, climb through forest to . The trail is only about 3.5 km each way, yet the steady rise makes it feel like a real mountain morning, with Mirror Lake appearing quietly before the final push. At the top, the tea house sits beside a small high lake, and the smell of baking feels strangely comforting after the climb. Carry cash and water, and start early if you want a table without turning the stop into a long wait.

By the end of the second lake day, the famous views start to separate into smaller memories: pale glacier lines above Lake Louise, a mug of tea cooling at altitude, the first sight of Moraine Lake from the rockpile. The trade-off is planning; spontaneity around these lakes usually turns into waiting.

Days 5–6Canada

Lake Louise to the Columbia Icefield

Leave Lake Louise with fuel, snacks and warm layers, then turn north onto the Icefields Parkway. In about 30 minutes you reach , where the water lies open under Crowfoot Mountain and the Wapta Icefield. It is an easy place to overstay, especially in still weather when the lake reflects every patch of snow above it. Make this your first proper stop rather than trying to photograph it through the windshield.

A little farther north, climb the signed path to . The viewing platform looks down on a wolf-head curve of blue water, with buses and cars coming and going in quick waves behind you. The practical move is simple: take the short viewpoint path, skip the rough trail down to the lakeshore unless you are prepared for a steep outing, and keep to the marked route on the alpine ground.

Continue to , where the river has cut a narrow limestone slot below the forest. The walk is short and downhill on the way in, so save energy for the climb back to the car. Stand on the bridge and watch the water fold into itself; the sound is deeper than it looks from the roadside.

A long Icefields Parkway day

  1. 7:30Leave Lake Louise with a full tank and the day’s road report already checked.
  2. 8:15Stop at before the busiest part of the morning.
  3. 9:30Walk up to and keep the stop tight if clouds are building.
  4. 11:00Stretch your legs at .
  5. 13:00Choose a proper alpine walk at if the weather is settled.
  6. Late afternoonEnd the driving day at , then continue to your Icefield or Jasper lodging.

If the sky is clear and you want one bigger walk, choose . The trail climbs in switchbacks from the road into a high, open ridge, where the air gets cooler and the sound of traffic drops away. Over the top, the view opens toward the Saskatchewan Glacier, a broad river of ice set far below the peaks. Allow two to three hours, and turn around early if weather changes fast.

A few minutes north, brings the glacier close enough to understand its scale. The path crosses grey, newly exposed rock where the ice has pulled back, and the wind off the glacier can feel sharp even in August. Stay on the marked gravel trail; if you want to stand on the ice, book a guided glacier trip from the icefield area. This is a sobering stop as much as a scenic one, because the retreat markers make time feel visible.

The parkway rewards restraint. Ten quick pullouts can blur together, while three or four stops with real walks give the day a shape. If you have extra nights, sleeping near the Icefield makes the road feel less like a transfer and more like the centre of the trip.

Days 7–10Canada

Waterfalls, Jasper and Maligne Lake

On the way north to Jasper, pull in at . The main viewpoint is close to the parking area, where the river drops hard into a narrow gorge and the spray hangs low in the air. If the lot feels crowded, continue on the lower falls trail for a quieter walk through forest and rock. It is a good place to reset after the wide, exposed country around the Icefield.

Before Jasper, stop again at . This waterfall is wide, muscular and loud, with the Athabasca River forcing itself through a tight channel under the bridge. Follow the paved paths to the old canyon channels, where smooth rock walls show where water once ran. Give it more time than a photo stop, because the best angles are spread out.

Settle in Jasper for the final two or three nights, knowing that the town and park are still living with the effects of the 2024 wildfire. For a first walk, choose , where small lakes sit in a warm valley and the water shifts from green to blue as the trail bends around each shore. Some sections have been repaired and realigned, so follow the current signs rather than old downloaded tracks. Early morning is best for parking and for the quiet sound of ducks moving through reeds.

Make the Maligne Valley your last full day and book before you arrive. The drive from Jasper takes about 1.5 hours when you allow for slow vehicles, wildlife stops and parking, and it feels more remote with every bend. The boat ride carries you down a long, cold lake toward Spirit Island, with peaks stacked at the far end and the engine noise bouncing softly off the water. After the cruise, take a short lakeside walk before driving back, because the return road is better when you are unrushed.

Jasper changes the mood of the trip. Banff and Lake Louise are bright and tightly managed; Jasper feels roomier, with elk on the edges of town and burned slopes showing how recent change sits beside deep mountain time. If you can stretch from seven days to ten, spend the extra time here rather than adding more stops to the parkway.

Good to know

Lake shuttles
Lake Louise and Moraine Lake work best when you treat the shuttle as part of the trip. Reserve early, use the lake connector between the two shores, and plan the day around your booked window.
Parkway driving
The Icefields Parkway is a remote mountain road with long stretches of limited services and little cell coverage. Leave with fuel, food, water, warm layers and the latest road report saved offline.
Jasper recovery
Jasper is open and worth your time, while recovery from the 2024 wildfire continues in some valleys. Check current trail and open-area reports before you swap hikes or add side roads.
Wildlife space
Wildlife is part of the trip, especially elk around Jasper in late summer and autumn. Keep distance, use a zoom lens, and give animals the right of way.
